BRIDGEWATER OR OWENS CEMETERY

Lexington Township
Scott County, Indiana

This old cemetery, occasionally still used today, is located in southwestern Lexington Township, in "Fractional Section" 11, Township 2 North, Range 7 East, which had been originally entered on Oct. 20, 1820, by Jabez Reeve (1781-1865). The triangular tract contained 251.42 acres and was a fraction of a full section since it bordered on Tract 295 of Clark's Grant. The cemetery is entered by a lane (an abandoned county road which once continued on east to State Road 3) which passes alongside Kinderhook Lake. There are sunken spots (and several rough field stones) denoting unmarked graves.

... Prom CEMETERY RECORD, SCOTT COUNTY, published in 1978.

In June 1987 there was a Styrofoam marker with artificial flowers outside the fenced area, without identification.

This cemetery has been cleaned and restored by the Scott County Cemetery Commission.

" Mary Ann (Coffman) 10/25/1755-3/20/1847*

Coffman is spelled "Coughman" throughout the Bridgewater Family History, owned by Mae Bridgewater Walker.

Samuel (and his brothers Elias and Isaac) were sons of Immanuel Bridgewater, an English Duke, who died without ever visiting America. The three sons immigrated to America sometime before the Revolutionary War, about 1770. They had been navigators for the celebrated Earl of Bridgewater, who was known as the father of inland navigation in England. The Earl of Bridgewater was also a Duke. These men owned quite a line of sea faring vessels for that day. In America, Immanuel's sons took sides with George Washington, and when war broke out, they joined his army.
