Nathaniel H. Dismore
1802-1889
Thanks to Mark Davis for providing this biographical sketch.
Nathaniel H. Dismore was born April 15, 1802 near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. He was the son of Henry and Martha (Smith) Dismore, English immigrants who came to this country in 1775 and were early settlers in the Kentucky wilderness. The Dismore family worked for a number of years at silk farming, feeding native mulberry leaves to the imported silk worms. By the time Natty was 15 years old both his parents had died.
He was married on May 26, 1822 to Margaret Deal, daughter of John Deal. To his union was born Catherine, Betsy, Susan, Margaret and John. They lived in Nelson County until around 1830, when they moved with several relatives to Scott County, Indiana. They purchased a farm in Lexington Township and joined the Scaffoldlick Baptist Church. It was in Lexington that Margaret (Deal) Dismore died in October of 1834 and was laid to rest in the church cemetery.
Natty remarried two years later to Sarah "Sally" Parks, daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Hugh Parks Sr. and Elizabeth Barnhill (both buried Scott County). Sarah was the widow of William Cunningham. Natty and Sarah were the parents of Angeletta, Henry Clay, Hugh James and Nathaniel Hamilton. The family farm eventually went to son Nathaniel Hamilton "Hammy" Dismore.
Natty and Sarah lived the rest of their lives in Lexington Township. Sarah died on June 5, 1880. Natty died November 24, 1889 and both are buried in Scaffoldlick Baptist Church Cemetery.
