HUGH COLVIN

Hugh Colvin (also spelled "Calvin"), born in Lexington on December 11, 1856, attended public schools there and married Annette Hartman, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Alsup) Hartman, on September 17, 1877. The couple had three children--Jennie, Gertrude and Frederick F. Annette Colvin, his wife, was born in Clark County in 1850 and died in Lexington on April 9, 1882.

Hugh Calvin married again on July 27, 1884 at Lexington. His second wife was Alice H. Close, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Weaver) Close. Miss Close was born near Lexington on November 6, 1856. Hugh and Alice had five children--James R., Maggie N., Thomas S., and twins Bertha and Guy. Hugh Colvin was twice elected trustee of the township, serving from 1886 to 1890 and was elected twice as Treasurer of Scott County, serving from 1890 to 1892.

Although baptized in infancy in the Presbyterian faith, he never identified himself with any branch of the church and his wife was a member of the Lexington Christian Church.

Hugh and his wife belonged to several lodges. He was a member of the Lexington I.O.0.F. Lodge No. 405, Scottsburg F. and A.M. Lodge No. 572 and Scott K. of P. Lodge No. 59. Mrs. Colvin was a member of the Lexington Rebeccas and the Scottsburg Eastern Star.

Hugh Colvin's father Thomas was born in County Down, Ireland in 1827 and moved with his family to Scott County in 1842. Thomas Colvin worked as a blacksmith, later moving to Jefferson County in 1868 and Clark County in 1873. He remained in New Washington until his death in June of 1882.

Hugh's mother, born in 1853, was Sarah J. Maiden, daughter of John and Malinda (Gobin) Maiden of New Washington, Indiana.

Hugh Colvin was the owner and proprietor of the Colvin House, a well-known hotel in Scottsburg. He died on December 21, 1892.
