The von Staden Family
Christopher, Guy, Grace, Anna, and George
Front: Hazel and Frank
This picture was taken about 1900 at Scottsburg, Indiana. There is a rather neat story to go with the family photo. Young Frank was upset because little sister Hazel was given a stool on which to have her feet, most unfair he thought. So, just before the photo was taken he sneaked one foot onto the stool to mark that he felt he had been wronged!
According to family legend Christopher came to America (New Orleans) as a stowaway on a cattle ship, probably in 1879, continuing on to join his brother Henry in California. Henry was married to Louisa English from Lexington, Indiana. Shortly after, Henry and family, including Chris, moved to Lexington. There Chris worked on the English estate. He married Anna Hollenbeck, who was born and raised in Lexington. They bought a small farm at Goshen close by. Here the first three children were born. After that Chris was superintendent of Scott County Poor Farm, this is where the last two children were born. They lived there for 12-15 years, and then moved to Indianapolis.
Thanks to Otto von Staden (otto@dalnet.se) of Sweden for the photo and story.
