Blanche E. Hollenbeck, 96, formerly of 1282 Grandview Road, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Sunset Manor in Titusville.
Born Nov. 16, 1902, in Emlenton, she was a daughter of Harvey Franklin and Laurena Neely Weeter. Mrs. Hollenbeck graduated from Emlenton High School in 1919 and received her permanent teaching certificate from Edinboro Normal School.
She also attended Slippery Rock and graduated from Clarion State Teachers College. She was a teacher for more than 40 years. She married Dane I. Hollenbeck on March 27, 1937, in Ripley, N.Y. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1988.
Mrs. Hollenbeck began her teaching career in a one-room school near Foxburg. She also taught at East Home, Petroleum Center, Clapp Farm and Rynd Farm, before coming to Oil City in 1929.
While in Oil City, she taught at Innis Street School, Central Avenue Junior High and South Side Junior High until her retirement in 1969.
Mrs. Hollenbeck was an avid rose gardener and had a lifelong love of books and reading. She was also interested in tutoring, travel, crossword puzzles and playing bridge. Mrs. Hollenbeck was an charter member of the Alpha Tau chapter of
Delta Kappa Gamma and a Past Worthy Matron of Morris Chapter,Order of the Eastern Star. She was also active in A.A.U.W. and held memberships in the P.S.E.A. and N.E.A. teachers organizations.
Mrs. Hollenbeck was an active member of the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as a deacon.
Mrs. Hollenbeck is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Clair Bayne of Oil City; two grandchildren, David and Dustin Bayne of Oil City; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Roy Weeter of Tippery. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diane Louise Hollenbeck; three brothers, Gerald, Samuel and Robert Weeter; and five sisters, Thelma Altman, Grace Ritchey, Betty McMurdy, Laura Weeter and Margaret Meabon. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City. Funeral services will
be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Geiger, pastor of the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment will be at the Salem United Church of Christ in Lamartine. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church, Sunset Manor in Titusville or the Oil City Library.
