Lawrence Hollenbeck Family

From "The Hollenbeck Family in America" compiled by Lawrence Hollenbeck, West Union, Illinois 1973 (provided by Keith Nater):

Lawrence Hollenbeck
1780-1866

LAWRENZE (LAWRENCE) HALLENBECK, SR. (my great grandfather) was born in Athens, Greene County, New York Colony, July 23, 1780. He migrated to the Illinois Territory in 1815. He was descended from the above line of Hallenbecks, and was the great-great-great grand-son of Casper Jacobse Hallenbeck of Beverwyck, Albany County, New York Colony.

This genealogy begins with Lawrence Hollenbeck, Sr.; progresses to his children; then to his children's children; and on down the years to the youngest members of the present time.

Lawrence Hollenbeck, Sr., my great grandfather, was born July 23, 1780 in Athens, Greene County, New York. He was the son of Jan (John) and Maria Van Bushkirk Hallenbeck and was baptized in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church (the Huguenots were Lutheran) in Athens, New York. He was married to Sarah Lewis (Lewes) on November 7, 1801. She was the daughter of Nathan Leneer Lewes (Lewis).

In 1815, Lawrence, Sr. and Sarah, with seven children: Nathan, born in 1802; John (my grandfather), born 1804; Huldah, born 1805; William, born 1807; Lawrence, Jr., born 1809; and Hannah, born in 1811, traveled from Onondaga County, New York, over-land to the Allegheny River, by boat down the Allegheny to the Ohio River, down the Ohio to the Wabash River and up the Wabash to a place now known as York (so named because most of its early settlers came from New York), Clark County, Illinois.

At that time (1815) York was located in what was then Edwards County, Illinois Territory. The Illinois Territorial Legislature, in 1816, created Crawford County from a portion of what was then Edwards County. At that time Edwards County extended northward to Canada. In 1818, the new State of Illinois was created and admitted to the Union. In an 1819 session of the legislature of the new state of Illinois, Clark County was created out of part of Crawford County.

E. Remarks: In the History of 1884 of Jasper County, Illinois, by the Jasper County Historical Society, I found that Lawrence Hollenbeck, Sr. and Thomas Garwood, his son-in-law and husband of Mary Hollenbeck, built a combination sawmill and gristmill on the Embarrass River, in section 36, town 7, range 9-east at Newton, Illinois (the present county seat of Jasper County), some time after 1831.*** Later, Lawrence, Sr. and his wife, Sarah, went to Linn County, Iowa, where Sarah died in 1847.**** Lawrence Sr. then went to Texas where he died on September 4, 1866.**** (This reference in Perrin's History is included in the biography of James B. Sheapley, husband of Hannah the daughter of Lawrence, Sr. and Sarah (Lewis) Hollenbeck.)

On June 29, 1971, I went to Newton, the county seat of Jasper County, Illinois, and searched through the various records on file in the courthouse and found the following information:

(1). Lawrence Hollenbeck, Sr., my great grandfather, served on the grand jury and the petit jury in the first term of the circuit court ever held in Jasper County. The date was March 2, 1835: Judge Justin Harlan, of Clark County, presided.

(2). Lawrence, Sr. was appointed as the School Commissioner in 1838.***

**** Perrin, op. cit., page 196.

(3). On August 4, 1838, Lawrence, Sr. entered forty acres of land, lying in section 36, town 7, range 9-east, on the Embarrass River east of Newton where he and his son-in-law, Mary's husband, built a combination gristmill and sawmill.*

(4). On February 16, 1839, Lawrence, Sr. sold forty acres of land to John D. Thomas for $60.00, and October 7, 1839, he sold 172 and 37/100 acres of land for $3,600.00 to a Joseph Picquet --- an immigrant just out of France.**

(5). I found, in the marriage records of Jasper County, that a William Hollenbeck was married to Nancy Jane Layer on October 26, 1858, but have been unable to determine his parentage.

I cannot find out just when Lawrence, Sr. left Clark County to migrate to Jasper County, or when he left Jasper County for Linn County, Iowa. I know that he was in Marion, Linn County, Iowa, on November 16, 1847, because I have a letter that he wrote to his son, Lawrence, Jr., who, at that time, resided in Clark County, Illinois.

On July 8, 1971, I returned to Newton and searched through the Riverside Cemetery for gravestones of Hollenbecks, but could find none.

Hollenbeck Family

Hollenbeck ancestors immigrated to America from Holland in the early 18th century, landing at New Amsterdam, now New York City, about 1709. Persons bearing the surname Hollenbeck were mentioned in the colonial history of the Revolutionary War for independence from England and also in the history of the War of 1812.

Casper Jacobse Hollenbeck, born around 1620 in Holland, was one of the early settlers in New York colony. Casper J. Hollenbeck had four sons, Jacob, William Janse, Isaac, and Jan Casper.

The line of descent from Casper Jacobse includes his son Jacob, born in 1654; Johannes, 1686; Jacob, 1713; Jan, 1746; Lawrenze, 1780; and Jan (John), 1804.

Lawrenze was born in Athens, Greene County, N.Y., in 1780. He migrated to the Illinois Territory in 1815, traveling from Onandago County, N.Y., overland to the Allegheny River, by boat down the river to the Ohio River, down the Ohio River to the Wabash River, and north up the Wabash to York. (York is so named as most of the early settlers came from New York. At that time York was located in Edwards County, which extended north to Canada.)

Lawrenze's son, John Casper, born in 1804, died in 1855 and was buried in Walnut Prairie Cemetery. His son, John Milton, was born May 19, 1838, on the farm near Walnut Prairie, now owned by Ivan Cline, and died Aug. 30, 1918, and was buried at Walnut Prairie Cemetery.

John Milton Hollenbeck's sons were William Tell, Charles Grant, Washington, Homer F., John Milton, Jr., and Lawrence, who are all deceased. Lawrence passed away Sept.18, 1976. Daughters of John Milton Hollenbeck, Sr., were Effie Alabaugh, Elsie Holwick and Jeanette Walters of Marshall. Jeanette is the only survivor.

Grandsons of John Milton, Sr., are Grant, William Homer, Everett M., John M., Wayne, and Max Eugene.
