Thomas Hollenbeck was born March 8, 1814 and was married to Susan
Darnell on 8/15/1833 at Fort Sandy, LaSalle County, Illinois.
Miss Darnell was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina on 2/25/1811. She
emigrated to Illinois in 1831 with her parents where they settled in LaSalle
County. The young married Hollenbecks moved to Newark, Kendall County, Illinois
in 1839. They resided there until 1847 when they moved to Cass County, Missouri.
In the spring of 1848, they started on the "Oregon Trail", intending to go
to Oregon, but on the way, learning of the discovery of gold in California,
they changed their course. They reached Sacramento on Thanksgiving day, having
been on the road from Westport landing, near Kansas City, just six months
to the day. From Sacramento they journeyed to San Francisco, where they remained
for three years. They left California in 1852, making the trip back to Illinois
by way of Cape Horn and New York City. In October 1855, Mr. Hollenbeck left
Illinois and went to Missouri. In 1866 he came to Hillsdale, Kansas, then
called Columbia, where he entered the mercantile business. This mercantile
business was continued by his son-in-law, Dr. J. P. Morrison. Mr. Hollenbeck
died at Atchison, Kansas October 5, 1875 and his wife died 2/27/1896.
