Death of Wm. A. Bradley
W. A. Bradley, living some seven or eight miles east of Holton, died after a brief illness, Friday, March 31. The evening before his death he ate a hearty supper, and went to bed in apparently his usual health. He soon became restless and could not go to sleep. Along toward midnight he got up and started out but stopped at the door. This alarmed Mrs. Bradley, who had become uneasy, and she got up and found him leaning against the door partially paralyzed and unconscious. She called for help and they got him to bed and sent to Larkin for a doctor. He did not get any better, and next morning they sent for Dr. Jermane, but before he got started word came that Mr. Bradley was dead.
The deceased was born in eastern Kentucky in 1839. He married a Miss Hollenback, and came to this county soon after, where he has since resided. He was a veteran of the war for the preservation of the Union, having served three years in the ranks.
Ten children were born to Mr. And Mrs. Bradley, seven of whom are living, and all but one or two grown up. The deceased was a member of the A. C. church, and was a faithful and conscientious Christian, and no doubt is enjoying the Christians reward in the better land.
Those who knew Mr. Bradley as neighbors and friends and fellow Christians all testify to his upright walk as a citizen, his loving care of wife and children and his conscientious practice of the principles of Christianity as he believed them. The funeral was largely attended by sympathizing neighbors and friends.
(We expected some information upon which to base a brief obituary notice of the late W. A. Bradley, of east Jackson, but did not receive it in time for last weeks issue, and through an oversight there was not even a notice of his death).

A Good Workman at Rest
Death claimed John W. Hollenbeck at one oclock Thursday afternoon. He had worked at his line-type as usual that morning. His last piece of machine composition was a sale bill set without an error. His long time fellow worker, Mort McCauley, drove him home at noon. John complained of a pain near the heart. He lay down without eating his lunch. Dr. Moser applied restoratives, but within an hour life had ebbed out without a struggle. Since his youth John had suffered from a diabetic malady that required a rigid diet. He had endured his handicap courageously, keeping steadily at work, often doubtless under stress of pain. He was thorough, conscientious and expert in his work, popular with his associates in the office.
He began work in the Recorder office in 1921, soon after his graduation from high school. In 1824-5 he spent two years working in Oregon, but returned to Holton and resumed work in the Recorder office, an uninterrupted connection of 20 years, working as printer and linotype operator. John was born in Larkinburg July 2, 1903, making his age 41 years, 3 months and 10 days.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Hollenbeck, of Holton; a sister, Mrs. A. D. Anderson, Seattle, Wash.; and two brothers, Ralph Hollenbeck, Olathe, and Floyd Hollenbeck, now in Army service in Ft. Hamilton, N. Y.
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church this (Monday) afternoon at 2 oclock, conducted by Rev. Troy Bess, pastor of the church. Burial will be in the Holton cemetery. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me, Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Hits Culvert on US 75
Car Wreck is Fatal to Jim Hollenbeck
James E. Hollenbeck, 39, Holton, died early Wednesday morning from injuries sustained in a one-car wreck south of Holton on US-75.
Hollenbeck was alone in his car, a 1962 Chrysler, when it left the highway 3 ½ miles south of Holton, jumped a creek and turned end over end. Officers who investigated the accident said he apparently went to sleep while driving.
From the point where the car left the surface to the point of final impact was 640 feet. Hollenbeck was driving south. The car gradually drifted from the surface to the shoulder. It jumped the creek missing the north bridge banister but catching the gasoline tank on the south starting the car turning end over end while still in the air.
The car came to rest about 60 feet south of the bridge on the west side of the highway. The vehicle was so completely demolished with pieces of wreckage thrown 100 feet beyond the place it came to rest that at first officers thought a second car had been involved.
There were apparently no witnesses to the accident. A truck driver discovered the wreck and notified authorities.
The wreck occurred at 12:30 a. m. Wednesday. Hollenbeck was brought by ambulance to the Holton Hospital where he died as the result of head injuries at 2:15 a. m. Wednesday.
The accident was investigated by trooper roger Thompson of the highway patrol and sheriff Don Collins.
Hollenbeck was operator of the Standard Oil Company service station here.
He was born July 25, 1925 in Topeka and had lived in Holton most of his life.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic lodge, Order of Eastern Star and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all at Holton.
Hollenbeck was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alma Hollenbeck, a daughter, Brenda Dawn, three sons, Raymond James, Ronald Edward and Gary William all of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Frank Bryan and Mrs. Charles Dachenhausen, both of Holton; Mrs. B. J. Hall, Leavenworth; and Mrs. B. L. Frazier, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and two brothers, Charles, Hiawatha; and Ralph, Gunnison, Colo.
