IS IT HOLLENBECK, OR IS IT HEMINGWAY?

Heeding Ernest Hemingway's immortal maxim, "Write what you know," ex-lawyer John Grisham found fame and fortune scripting legal thrillers. Onetime ROTC trainee Tom Clancy wrote about soldiers, while Michael Crichton, a Harvard Medical School graduate, called on his knowledge of doctors and scientists. Now, photographer Cliff Hollenbeck has a ready pen for what he knows best.

Hollenbeck, a travel photographer and author of how-to guides such as Big Bucks: Selling Your Photography, will debut his first novel next summer. Called The Acapulco Goodbye (Commonwealth Publishing), it's a murder mystery whose charismatic, rugged protagonist just happens to be--you guessed it--a travel photographer.

Hollenbeck says, "I took a lot of elements from my life, and then I took a lot of pieces of other people's lives and slipped them in there." But his likeness to the novel's lens-toting hero, Scott Wolfe, is not mere coincidence. Besides being travel photographers, both men are Vietnam vets, in business with wives named Nancy, and have shot assignments at Las Brisas, the Mexican resort that serves as a backdrop to Goodbye's drama.

An ego trip? Perhaps, but Hollenbeck swears his character is far from perfect. "He's like Jim Rockford," he says, referring to the Seventies television P.I. "You knew Rockford was going to get the crap kicked out of him in every episode."

The novel's action begins when Wolfe witnesses a murder through his 600mm lens during a sunset shoot at a hotel pool. In florid swipes of the brush, Hollenbeck paints a somewhat cliched picture of the pivotal moment: "A powerfully built man stepped confidently through the doors and moved quickly toward the woman. Her eyes opened wide like a rabbit caught in the lights of a hunter's pickup truck. She stood helpless and waited. Without emotion or words the big man crossed the patio and hit her in the face with a solid left punch. The girl spun backwards and he caught her by the blouse which ripped open. He struck her in the face with another savage blow and the blouse ripped completely away, revealing her nude shoulders and full breasts."

Hollenbeck is forthcoming about his first foray into fiction. "I did this as a lark--you've got to get that in," he says, possibly seeking to excuse the story's overblown aspects. He says he was not motivated to write by other authors, but rather by watching television. "I said to Nancy, 'Gee, I can write stuff as bad as this,'" he recalls. Not surprisingly, Hollenbeck is shopping a film script of the story, and says he has received inquiries.

The son of an Associated Press photographer, Cliff Hollenbeck started working as a travel photographer in 1975, after a six-year career in the Navy, followed by stints as a newspaper editor and as a public relations director for two airlines. The Seattle-based photographer, who insists he is 29 years old, is the author of ten books, half of which he co-wrote with Nancy, his wife of 25 years.
