This photograph was provided by Robert
Middleton. It belonged to his great great grandmother Victoria
Marcella Kempton Middleton. It was identified by her as "Cousin Jimmie
Loughran - Lexington, Ind". With a bit of deduction, it appears that "Jimmie"
is James Loughran; he died on 11/24/1863 (and is buried in the Lexington
Cemetery). He was born about January 1823. I believe his mother was Elizabeth
Loughran. I found a marriage in a book of Scott County marriages, in Marian's
possession, between James Loughran and Elizabeth Campton, March 4, 1823.
Elizabeth and James (as well as a Jane) show up in the 1850 and 1860 Census.
Elizabeth died 6/30/1864 (Age: 69 yrs). The Census indicates that James Jr.
was a silversmith, Elizabeth was a housewife, and Jane was miliner. Elizabeth
was listed as being from South Carolina. Since Victoria identified James
as a cousin, I am of the opinion that Elizabeth was Kempton, not a Campton.
She was about a year younger than William, and they were both from South
Carolina, so I suspect they were brother and sister. It makes me wonder if
some of the other Camptons in Scott County were really Kemptons.
