This photograph was provided by Robert
K. Middleton. It is Robert Middleton, son of James and Nancy.
The picture was probably taken in early 1865. Robert was born in Scott County,
probably on the family farm near Lexington, on 22 February 1838. As a young
man, his physical description was identified in a military discharge document
as being 6'2" tall, black hair, hazel eyes and fair complexion. He suffered
typhoid fever, measles and severe diarhhea shortly after mustering in the
service. He spent some time at a hospital in Louisville in late 1862, was
furloughed in early 1863 and returned to his unit, Company C, 38th Indiana
Infantry Regiment. He rose in the ranks from Sergeant to Captain and was
the commanding officer when the company was mustered out in July 1865. He
never completely recovered from his ailments and was forced to give up farming
as an occupation upon returning to Lexington. He was a store clerk, postmaster,
and member of the Lexington Board of Trustees between 1865 and 1870. His
health steadily declined and he was bed-ridden during the last six months
of his life. He married Victoria Marcella Kempton on 8 October 1867 and had
two children by her; Edward Woodburn Middleton, born 24 June 1868 in Lexington,
and Robert Kempton Middleton, born 30 March 1870, also in Lexington. Robert
Sr. died on 19 January 1870.
