Lt. Sheldon Craigmyle Graduated at Indianapolis
Ready for the spring offensive over Europe and the Pacific is Lieut. Sheldon Craigmyle, 1252 Lawrence Ave., Indianapolis, who got his silver wings and graduated as a second lieutenant March 20. Lieut. Criagmyle is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. I. R. Craigmyle of Hanover and is also a nephew of Gurnsey Craigmyle of Madison, route five. Lieut. Craigmyle has many friends in and around Madison who are proud of him and wish him all the luck in the world as he goes to smash the Japs and the Axis.
The following information and photograph was provided by Tammy Tinney Caine, who is the niece of Allene Tinney Craigmyle.
Sheldon Craigmyle was a hero of World War II. While flying over Scotland, he ordered his men to descend to clear the ice from their wings first. Sheldon could not regain control of his plane from the ice forming on his wings and he perished as the plane crashed into a mountain side. He was a decorated war hero who gave his life for his crew. Allene, his wife of less than 6 years, took the news very hard and still mourns his loss.
According to his cousin, James Dale Kleopfer, he was in a band in Madison, Indiana and "played a mean saxaphone". He fondly recalls that he was "the best Craigmyle of them all". His wife, Allene, sang professionally for a while. As you can see from this photograph from 1943, she was a very beautiful lady.
More information on the crash.
